Grade 3C Room 6

We have settled into camp and had a wonderful first day. Yesterday we had two activities followed by free time. After dinner we had a talent show. We all had a great first night sleep and are excited for our second day of camp!

In class we have been learning about procedural writing. A procedure has a title, goal, materials and sequential steps. We followed a procedure about ‘How to Make Chocolate Crackles.’ After making the chocolate crackles we wrote our own procedure about the process. We were also able to watch the copha change from a solid to a liquid when heat was applied to it, this linked in with our Science Inquiry ‘Melting Moments.’ At the end of the day we all enjoyed a chocolate crackle, yummy!

 For Science this term our class is doing a Chemistry based unit called ‘Melting Moments.’ We are learning about  how solids and liquids are influenced by temperature. The children have been experiencing the way items from their everyday lives can change. We conducted an investigation to see what happened to different objects when heat was applied (through a heater) and then what happened to the objects when they were placed in a cold environment (the fridge and the freezer).

We have had a very exciting week in Room 6 because we are no longer Room 6! On Monday we began our move to the new classroom on the basketball court. We are now in Room 10B. Our new classroom is full of light and space! We are stilling waiting on our storage cupboards and interactive TV but the room is coming together. Please stop in and see our new classroom.

Last Friday it was Book Week. Here are a few pictures of the children dressed up as their favourite book character!

Last week in Maths Room 6 were learning about 3D Shapes. The children made 3D shapes with match sticks and plasticine. They then had to record the name of the shapes, number of corners/vertices, edges and faces. Next the children used the iPads to record their work to share.

Hi Room 6!

I am having a wonderful time on my Europe trip! So far I have been to England, The Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria and Italy. At the moment I am in Rome! It is beautiful and I have seen so many amazing sights. I can’t wait to share my trip with you when I return.

On Friday we celebrated Education Week at school. The children were excited to have parents and special guests in the classroom to complete a design brief around our inquiry topic of sustainability. As part of the design brief the children had to make a wind farm that runs off sustainable energy. The wind farm needed to have at least 10 wind turbines, use multiple colours and have an interesting name displayed on the farm. At the end we tested to see how the turbines worked with a source of wind (Miss Coates’ hairdryer). Well done to wind farm “Bob” and wind farm “Eco Wind Farm” who had excellent success with their turbines spinning!

Yesterday at school we had the zoo come to us! The children learnt about the endangered animals, what has caused them to become endangered and what people can do to help protect these animals. Here are some fun photos with the animals.

Yesterday Room 6 and Room 4 went to the Discovery Centre as part of the Latrobe University STEM (Science, Technology, Maths & Engineering) unit. The children learnt about the difference between a solid, liquid and gas and explored these differences through various experiments. We also got some free time to explore the Discovery Centre. Three very brave students even went down the vertical slide, great job Ewen, Kylah and Olivia!
